Chandeliers—Don’t Overwhelm Your Poor Dining Room!

Chandeliers are elegant and unparalleled additions to any room and they can command attention like no other furnishing. Choosing the right chandelier for the dining room is not exactly the “cake walk” you might think because the size and style will depend upon the needed illumination and size of the table.

Chandeliers have multiple bulbs and tend to shed a lot of light. The amount of illumination that you will need for the dining room will be based upon this formula: Length X Width X 1.5. If a room is 12 X 15, then you will need roughly bulbs that produce a combined total of 270 watts. A chandelier with 6-40 Watt bulbs will most likely provide adequate illumination, especially if complemented by wall sconces, buffet lamps, or other light fixtures.

The diameter of chandeliers should be approximately equal to ½ the width of the dining room table and mounted close to 27-30 inches above the table.
